need an ARB

We're designing a fancy teach module and we need an ARB to test the code and stuff. We need to make some goofy waveforms, gear wheels with offset teeth and such. We want something fast from Amazon.



The Rigol gear is generally good.



Owon is cheaper. Is Owon any good?



Koolertron? They have one for $118.


Tach, not teach. Spell corrector preferred teach.

In the cheap-but-good category, our former regular Bob Masta sells/sold a pretty swoopy DAQ/generator app called Daquarta that uses a sound card.

For somewhat higher frequency, we have a 60 MHz Siglent arb that we use a lot.

I have a FY6600 which was cheap and seems adequate.

Among many other lab instrumentalities, my versatile, 25 MHz bandwidth ADAML2000 is able to act as an arbitrary function generator:

Besides generating the usual waveforms via user control settings, it's also able to input: Waveform Audio Files, MATLAB real value arrays, Comma Separated Variables (eg Excel), and math functions. It optionally injects: Uniform, Gaussian, Laplacian, and/or Impulse noise.

I have, and he could use, a FPGA board with R2R DAC and can write any code for any waveform I like ;-)

As a 'teach' module what could be better as to teach how to write the code? Sine and other waveforms lookup tables etc works too.

You would have to suck it and see. A RasPi could probably be subverted to playback a lookup table almost jitter free relatively easily.

If you only need audio frequencies or lower then the PC software Daquarta is what I use for educational demos (mostly for waterfall FFT audio frequency spectra). Other apps for Android/iOS also available.

ISTR you can use its waveform generator free gratis and forever.

I think there is a free trial period too. I have no connection with them other than as a satisfied customer. I haven't got the latest version.

In the past its install package sometimes triggered false positive AV warnings for me. I had to speak to the AV people to get that fixed.

Those cheap ones have ridiculously small waveform lengths for their sampling frequencies. What can you do with 8k? Rigol seems much more practical with 2Mpts on their low end.

These people look like more traditional instrumentation salespeople who can make reasonable recommendations based on details of the application. I've never used them, but they must have something going on after being in business for nearly 40 years. They carry lots of Rigol. Prices are competitive.

I think we'll go with the Rigol DG1022Z. It's DC coupled, has lots of memory, and specs 1% amplitude accuracy. $389 from Amazon.

We're making a fancy PoE tachometer and need to build the test setups.

People make toothed wheels, essentially gears, with non-uniformly spaced or length teeth, so we need to simulate that.

One of my guys asked some AI to do that, and it did! It even simulated the sensor waveforms.

We've standardized on the Rigol oscilloscopes, so we'll go with their ARBs too. The scopes are excellent.
