My Win 7 PC is nice, how do I tstop it from constant HD access.?

Usually I find it's anti-virus and/or firewall crap that causes "activity". I also recently found that a "google application updater" had found its way onto my laptop and was doing similar annoying things.

I'm in the market for replacing 3 vintage towers...

DELL Precision workstations. They have 3 channel memory, which gives a nice boost. They are running Xeon's, good for crunching numbers. I don't know if spice on a Xeon would outrun spice on an i7. But, I'm betting on the Xeon ;) They workstations also offer faster Hard drives, if and when Thailand dries out. Apparently WD's 10Krpm Raptors are made there.

Search around the web. McAfee has gained a reputation for being a performance killer. There's other anti-virus software around that's supposed to work well without consuming all your computational resources to do it.

(This is all overheard -- I use Linux. But #1 son is a Windows user).

You have to watch out when updating software that the "acceptance" page doesn't have little checkboxes checked for default accepting things you do not really want.

It depends on the purpose each would serve. The key is to do a good requirements analysis, then decide which machine needs to be "hot" if any, and decide which can be a cheaper model.

Yes. I dumped McAfee years ago and now use Microsoft's Security Essentials. I figured that, since I'm using Win7, maybe it would provide me with the needed protection. This is not an endorsement exactly, but I've had only one problem a few months ago but a full scan fixed everything.

On the other hand, I have an i7 with SS drives. It's fast enough now that everything works well.

That would imply that I have a virgin W7 OS, This Pc is new, I've already removed a few packaged items. It is getting better as a more things get removed and configured differently.

AT this point, I could remove the 2 apps I see in the resource manager that is triggering these events.

Do you know the rep rate or duty cycle, or something? I have an i7 and it blinks shortly at about a 1 second rate and, since I listen to background music all the time, there is a long blink about every 4 or 5 seconds. Like getting the stream from the Web.

What you want to do is google for tips on SSD, even if you don't have SSD. The tips have all the tricks to reduce disk activity.

For instance, assuming you have sufficient RAM, eliminate disk caching. Turn off indexing. Turn off the win 7 superfetch.

We need a workhorse desktop PC for a specific number-crunching task. After much research, we're probably going to go with a machine based on the Intel Sandy Bridge 2600k quad-core - even if we build it from components (newegg, etc...)

For our purposes, we will use SATA drives, but some opt for SSD's for the operating system. Won't really be of that much benefit to us, but your mileage may vary.
