Muffled/"Mushy" Sound

May 07, 2010 7 Replies

Watching an "old" movie (1975, "Capone" :-) via cable

The sound was muffled/"mushy"... hard to understand.

Other sources are fine.

What is "mushy" sound? Hum mixed in? Distortion? What is it?

Can it be processed to clean it up? ...Jim Thompson

It requires dumping cable and going to FIOS. ;D

Cheers

I saw Capone on cable recently, too. It sounded crystal clear. Of course, I'm at least a decade younger than you are.

If the two of you were watching the same movie, odds are that someone at Thompson's CATV company screwed up the audio between the program source and the distribution system.

I bet one print (with the mushy sound) had an optical sound track and the other print had a mag stripe on the edge for the audio. The specs for mag tape are well known, and regular old 16bit 44khz CDs sound a lot better, I think the optical track has worse signal to noise ratio than the mag tape. Every spec of dust is a click or pop just like a record.

you mean other than an audiophool term?

frequency spread? some frequencies heavily attenuated? reverb?

as much of the distortion as can be characterised without a random term or a zero term can probably be reversed
