MIT Radiation Lab series on CD-ROM?

I came into this thread late and have been reading it at deja-news. If I understand correctly what people are saying, the series and a paperback reprint of it are out of print and there was a CD ROM digital reprint that is also out of print.

How many disks were used for the CD ROM edition? What are the chances that it will be reissued at a reasonable rate? Also, what kind of files is it kept in? I'm always concerned about how I would read it on a Linux system.

I wouldn't care to mix what didn't work in with what did work. Readers of the specs that work have no interest in reading about the trials and gray hairs producing that knowledge... unless it affects implementing the widget. But there is value in separate papers that could be collected and called _Grim Tales of Product X_. One of the things we never had time for nor paid for was to document why we did particular tradeoffs in the initial design phase. By the time we finally got a product out the door we had forgotten all of the decisions, why we'ld made the decisions, and were sick of the whole thing and wanted to start working on the next neat project.

Our biz is now suffering from what we didn't write because our youngsters are now having to make the same tradeoffs and are going through the same learning curve.

Scientists must have a harder time of it because they can't even tell which decision will make things work until years or decades later. They have an open-ended product cycle that may never ship. That has got to be one big itch.

There are two disks (CD-ROM, not DVD). I'm still waiting for confirmation that it's actually going to be shipped-- I called before placing the order and they said only one unit was actually available.

I thought this strange too, but so much is strange in the East. ;-) Apparently Taxyourtwoshits still has (or did until recently) a "poll tax", though it's not related to elections, rather a flat tax charged to everyone without regard to income or property valuation.

I'm zeroing in. It apparently was a Cambridge (city) tax. I find references, but no date brackets after its inception in the 1930's.

The "article" consists simply of an exact copy of the memo. Its authenticity has not been disputed by the White House. I'm sure they're not happy it's leaked out, but they don't claim it's wrong, AFAIK. Sounds pretty reliable to me.

Maybe. The recent trend is to tax visitors instead of residents. They can't vote you out, so why not tax 'em?

Usually done as a tax/use fee on car rentals, hotel rooms, etc. Some places can be pretty steep, with the "tax" coming to $20-$30 a day just for visiting.

No, as reported, a Whitehouse spokesman "acknowledged" the document (which was the minutes of a meeting held three years ago at 10 Downing Street written by Matthew Rycroft who was a foreign policy advisor to Tony Blair), saying, IIRC, they "do not dispute its contents." More important, in the huge bru-haha this created in British headlines for their election (the supposedly-liberal US press barely paid attention), SFAIK its accuracy was not disputed by the individuals who were in the meeting and who received the document. It would have been in the interest of Blair's government to dispute the document, which "showed a coordinated effort by the US and the UK to manipulate Hussein into giving them justification for declaring war."
