Joerg... 3:10 to Yuma

Graduated one granddaughter last night from Desert Vista HS (Ahwatukee).

Tonight, another at Cibola HS (Yuma).

40 PSI in the tires, suspension switch changed to "Sport"...

So, vrooom... vrooom... 3:10 to Yuma, literally, 3 hours and 10 minutes... O:-) ...Jim Thompson

With one eye always on the radar detector? How many speeding ticket have you collected so far?

I average about one every three years... which don't count against my insurance, because I get class credit (but sleep thru it), and I argue with the instructor about anti-skid, keeping him on edge... and the teenies in the class love me for correcting the instructor ;-)

Yes, the radar detector is hidden but active O:-)

BTW, never _ever_ caused an accident (in 54 years of driving), so my rates are quite low (for the expensive car I drive). ...Jim Thompson

Almost. Doing ~105 westbound, with a Californicator, driving a PT Cruiser, hanging in my draft.

Topped a rise, DPS sitting in the media, staring me in the face. No radar whine, no nothing.

What can you do, just ease off and hope O:-)

I continue on in my lane, easing down to ~85 and watching my mirror.

Californicator panics over into the sheeple lane and drops to 65.

I see DPS pop out and haul ass up the high speed lane.

Turn on the red and blues.

And pull the Californicator over :-P

Reverse boycott, or what ?:-)

I did 190 miles in 2:20, 81.43MPH average speed, including going thru Maricopa and its traffic light every mile, and 10 miles single file thru construction over the ridge east of Yuma (MP22-MP12).

(3:10 is my typical time with a lunch stop in Gila Bend.) ...Jim Thompson

Maybe. In general you have to be really careful in most states if you've got out of state plates. Oregon, for example, is quite known to pull over Californians.

With people it can be the other way around. When I tooled around New York in a fairly large vehicle with West Virginia plates people tended to get out of my way, "Oh no, one of them farm boys!" :-

I usually take it easy. A long drive is a nice opportunity not to be bothered, and think about some circuit designs.

_You_ drove with WV plates?? That's my home state. And you're correct, I used to spook pedestrians in Cambridge by sneaking up on them in the cross-walks, then hitting the horn O:-)

I can't drive and think circuits, so I minimize driving time :-)

My son-in-law just burst my bubble... those aren't speed cars tucked in the brush... they're looking for drug-runners. ...Jim Thompson

It was a rental car.

I don't do that. A friend had a little doorbell under the hood. If a pedestrian was at a crosswalk and lost in a newspaper instead of actually walking across he hit the magic button ... "ding-dong". Another had a speaker under the hood. "Sir, please, after you, sir" or "Nice dress, ma'am!"

But I assume the big boss wants to see a certain "income" quota per day :-)

Do you have one of those electronic 'horns' on your pickup truck?

Wolo makes a lot of interesting toys. ;-)

I like the freight train and ocean liner horns. :)

Of course it would be simple to use a small amp and PA horn with a MP3 player to make your own.

I had the air horn on my Renault Dauphine... a car so small most people ignored it... until I hit the horn :-)

My pick-em-up truck has only its conventional horn. Likewise the Q45, though it's rarely used... closing on someone really fast usually results in them moving over automatically :-) Otherwise I flash the headlamps. ...Jim Thompson

My neighbors have an air horn in their Hummer. The neighbor on the other side had her arrested. FWIG, the cops and the judge didn't see the humor; disturbing the peace, modification of automobile safety systems... I don't know what the final total was.

I see that as a courtesy, but to some it's an invitation for road rage.

My 1987 model Audi station gets over 25mpg at that speed, even while fully loaded with half a ton of stuff. It's still roaming the Autobahns, often long haul Germany-Sweden. I really miss that car.

This one has catalytic converter and all that. I had that retrofitted to update the car to the latest smog rules. Wasn't mandatory but they gave a tax rebate which made the total out-of-pocket cost around zero. It did come with a fuel consumption penalty but that penalty was very small.

This is claimed to do 155 MPH. The mileage probably isn't very good at that speed.

ftp://jjlarkin.lmi.net/A3a.jpg

I didn't intend to buy this much car; I just wanted a Rabbit with 4WD. And I didn't want anything that was black, white, or grey.

The drive train is sort of weird. It's a 6-speed automatic with basically two transmissions, one for odd gears and one for even, two clutches, no torque converter.

Neat. But I wouldn't want to crash in it at 155mph. I had the big old fat one, a station wagon called "Avant". With the smallest possible engine they offered, only 1.8l and it topped out somewhere around

115mph. On Sunday afternoons (when all of Germany watches soccer) on the way to a client in Bavaria I could open her up, floor it, and stay at top speed 80% of the time. But you had to ease off 15 minutes before getting there, it wouldn't be good to turn off an engine that hot. It did have a fan that would keep running for a while but when people did that you could hear the water inside the engine beginning to boil.

I've never liked automatics, never had one.
