Help with EAGLE

Hi all,

I'm using the EAGLE PCB layout editor and absolutely love it. It's so much easier than other software I've worked with. I am, however, running into a problem with TQFP packages and the autorouter. If I bring in a TQFP package (e.g. PIC18F65J10) and a 8 pin header and make

8 random connections from the PIC to the header, and then go into the "Board" mode and use the autorouter...it will not lay out the connections for me. However, if I take any DIL PIC package and mimic the above steps, it works fine.

I'm new to EAGLE and I'm guessing it has to do with my net width? I'm not sure though and would appreciate any help in the matter.

Have you allowed the autorouter to use the top layer?

The autorouter can only reach pads on the grid. Make the grid finer, and the autorouter will find the pads.

There's an Eagle newsgroup out there; I subscribe to it whenever I'm hot and heavy in board design. Check the Eagle website for the address. It seems to have a good mix of Eagle users and developers, so there's usually good answers to be had.

When selecting the autorouter, I bumped the routing grid down to 10. This allowed TQFP40 package to be successfully routed, but still does not work for a TQFP80. Actually, when autorouting with the TQFP 80, only the pins on each corner are routed so I'm guessing there is some kind of clearance issue between adjacent pins? Any ideas how to fix this...I tried setting the routing grid all the way down to 3 mil and it still wouldn't work.

I don't know about eagle, but with PCB you have to set the routing (net) styles *as well as* the design rules.

In DRC, try reducing your minimum trace width, the distances, and sizes. In DRC|MISC, uncheck the "grid check" and possibly "angle check".

You can fiddle with these things until you get it to route, then readjust to what you actually need.
