Distributor prices for FFC jumpers appear high, e.g. $5 for a
4-position, 6-inch unit at 0.5 mm pitch. That's pretty steep, considering the connectors only cost 60 cents per end.Where do you folks get FFC jumpers?

"Crazy" way to bypass: make a PCB layout exactly the size and shape you want, and have a PCB house make it in flex. There are a number of PCB houses that have that as a standard capability. For search, use FabFile online,or e-mail "Harvey Miller FabFile" .
yeh if you can cut it in strip yourself you could get a lot from something like this:
the thing is that the "real" ones normally have some kind of tape to protect tracks and a backing under the conector ends
