It's bugs causing bugs...

Ants like that would probably not survive outside in BC. Too much rain here during the rainy season. Slugs do well. You have to be careful not to slip and fall on the big ones. A full bicycle tire width in the middle of dead slugs can be found on the park trail. :P

I remember when I was a kid living in BC, around Chilliwack or Vedder Crossing or someplace like that, we went camping in a big old canvas tent (I still remember the smell of that thing every time I go to an Army surplus place).

We had corn on the cob, and in the morning, the slugs were all over the cobs we threw on the ground. Hundreds of 'em sliming their way onto the cobs. They were maybe 3" long, not the giants ones you sometimes see out there.

ants survive fine in tropical rainforest climes. The cold in your winter is what keeps them down.

In floods, they have been found floating in huge clumps, keeping the colony alive and afloat until they reach dry land.

While on bugs... I've noticed these spiders quite often in BC.

It's a Zebra spider..

"Zebra spiders are often noted for their 'curiosity' when observed by humans; many seem aware of their audience and seem to respond to observation by raising their heads and studying the observer. Many people describe Zebra spiders as 'cute'."

It's true!

The spider will watch and back away from a moving finger. It'll jump if you cross it's threat threshold. No webs..They hunt by sneaking up and jumping on prey. Acrobatics! Pretty smart for a spider that's only about 5mm.

Sorry Houston.. They don't eat ants.. No help from the Zebra spiders.

But, are they good eatin'? I'd think it'd be like escargot without the shell(s). ;-)

Cheers! Rich

I don't think so...McDonald's would have the McSlug by now. :)

Putting a bunch of slugs on a stick and roasting them over a fire might be nice.. That'll burn off the gooey mucous.. :P

Some slug eating on Youtube I'm sure but couldn't get a link..Their site seems broken at the time I checked.

Someone wrote, "It takes about 5 beers to get someone to eat a slug."
