I think the answer is maybe they will. You can make a ceramic by mixing powders that has magnetostrictive and PZ effect. There are some AC magnetic field detectors that are done this way. I imagine that a mix like that can also make the needed material.

Thing is, you implicitly have a gap of 50% either in magnetic or electric terms. Maybe not as much in electric terms, because ferrites tend to be moderately conductive; they'll be terribly lossy as a result.

The challenge is making something which is magnetically and electronically polarized, preferably in the same crystal, so the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric domains can run together without being interrupted by grain boundaries.

For a small amount (relative perm*****ity ~= 2), mixing powers would work.

I've seen those, in person even, but that's not the same oscillatory mechanism. There's no feedback (propagation against the electron direction) in a free-electron laser.

Sure there is, it's electromagnetic.

Note it requires mirrors, and a sufficiently small amplitude that the beam can be produced coherently. And that, when mirrors aren't available, you just build it with more gain, so you get superfluorescence.

That's just a laser.

A corrugated pipe has interesting propagation modes. There's basically a slotline mode that wraps around it from end to end, distinctly different from, say, a string of coupled cavities.
