Yup, when I first started working with them ('75), there were no spring loaded pistons, rather direct freon (phase-change) cooled. They changed to the pistons (surrounded by He) after they found crud growing on the chips (boiling => distilling).

Back side is the only layer can be populated beside the front side... I've heard resistors and caps can be embedded in the inner layers, but we don;t need that
