That's why they say wood will heat you twice. Once when you chop it and again when you burn it.

No, I like the hard freeze. (well not the heating bill, or plowing the driveway... the price I have to pay.)

The wood stove came with the house. We have a love/hate relationship.

Re: wood gathering. At some point I could see it becoming "old".. when I become older I guess. At the moment it's a great excuse to be in the woods, and work my muscles. Much cheaper than a gym membership.

And as you said, having wood (and a stove to burn it) gives a sense of security.

Oh I wanted to say, that we keep our house at 66 F (during the day) It's a very tight house.. no drafts. And that makes it much more comfortable. IMHO

You're making conclusions with zero data. I'm well aware of active solar systems, I just don't like them as a first choice.

Passive is more rugged, orders of magnitude more reliable, and doesn't quit when the grid's down.

It's also an order of magnitude cheaper, maybe two.

I'm well acquainted with those too.

Unfounded conclusion. You extrapolate too much from too little.

Grin. There's wood galore in my region, to where people think it a nuisance. You haul it, it's yours. But it's definitely more work than gas.

My gas bill is still mostly the minimum service charge--that's hard to beat.

If I had a wood heater already you bet I'd be using it, just for the joy of it. It'll be sub-zero tonight or tomorrow, so it'd be handy too But I'll go without most things rather than bother with the permitting and inspection dance--not my thing.

Yes. I like earthiness, and I like the smell.

Lots of neighbors burn wood but I'd want to do it cleaner, free of soot and nasties.

My place is horrifically drafty. Some day I'll get about to fixing it. That has the backhanded 'benefit' of changing the air frequently, which Fred will like. The energy usage is still minimal the way I use the place, so the upgrade's not high on my list.

There are some significant risks when the air flow through the building materials is reduced.

When humidity is trapped into the building material during construction or use, molds spread quite easily, emitting gases into the air, causing health problems. In Finland hundreds of schools have been relocated due to problems caused by unhealthy indoor air due to molds.

Some building materials emit radon into the indoor air.

Particle boards may emit formaldehyde.

Humans emit carbon dioxside and other substances.

In order to keep the indoor air healthy, you need to use _all_the_time_ some form of active air condition units, not just to heat/cool the indoor air but also remove undesired elements from the air and replacing it with healthy air.

The need for continuous air conditioning will make that goal of reducing energy consumption to 1 % is not realistic.

It seems that humidity also affects how you feel a certain temperature.

Anyway, it takes 1-2 weeks to feel comfortable in a certain temperature.

At -5 C outside air temperature, the air-to-air heat pumps works quite well, below -20 C it is useless.

Air-to-water heat pumps for hot water is not that effective at -5 C outdoor temperature.

Why do you heat the garage ? Just install a block heater with a timer that starts to warm your engine 2 hours before you intend to drive. The engine (even diesel) will start reliably, the windows are clear within a few minutes after starting your engine and the cabin will warm up quite fast thereafter.

Heat pumps have a nasty habit of icing up in cold weather. Last time I checked, most had electric heaters on the outdoor side to prevent this, which sort of defeats the purpose.

My point was that at -5 C outdoor temperature, the heat pump is quite usable, but at -20 C there are freezing problems.
