The analogy is rates go higher to cover those who don't participate. Why does it cost $10,000 a day to stay in a hospital? Probably to cover those who don't buy insurance?

Meanwhile my medical insurance costs me 127.30 euro per month - $184.32 at the current rate of exchange. I've got to pay the first 150 euro of what my prescriptions cost per year, but I get some of that back.

Americans keep on forgetting that our "socialised" system (actually Bismark's national insurance scheme) costs - per head - about 2/3's of what Americans pay and provides everybody with same high quality of health care that only insured Americans get to enjoy.

Obamacare is a small step in the right direction, but it's going to take a while before the reforms start purging the money-guzzling parasites that make your system needlessly expensive.

Of course I don't pay it - directly. It is collected from employers. This was money that they couldn't pay me - when I was working - or their shareholders, so it still comes out of the communal pocket.

It's lasted for about a century now, and its not wildly different from the US system - though you probably don't know enough to realise this. I've certainly worked long enough in the UK and paid enough tax there to be a net contributor to their economy - particularly when you consider that I was brought up and educated in Australia - and the Dutch, UK and Australian systems take the attitude that where they lose on educated emigrants, they win on educated immigrant.

Since I was paid well above the average industrial wage for all of my working life, I've actually contributed considerably more than average to system - the very antithesis of a welfare queen - but your tiny little mind won't be able to digest this unpalatable fact.

"Many ways" is idiot-speak for "don't know". Premium costs go up for a variety of reasons, but in your system the major reason is the relentless greed of the insurance companies, who scream "socialism" whenever anyone tries to pull their snouts out of the trough, and idiots like you are gullible enough to bleive them.

The health care systems of the advanced industrial countries of western Europe deliver the same quality of health care to all their inhabitants as yours only offers to the fully insured, and they do it for roughly two thirds of the cost per head. The U.K.'s National Health system is even cheaper, but can be slower to deliver non-urgent care.

Your system is certainly far from perfect, and an appreciable chunk of the money being wasted in your system is being devoted to sabotage the Democrat-driven initiatives to start purging the money guzzling leaches from the system. If you could get that propaganda machine to stfu and start thinkig for yourselves, you might yet find a way of moving your system towards the less imperfect healht care systems that the rest of us enjoy.

Maybe California's mandatory insurance should be re-termed "mandatory support of people who don't want to pay"--that's the major effect. Ditto Obamacare.

I went through an airport yesterday. Impressive that history's dumbest administration wanted naked pictures of us all. Loads of uniformed unionized gov't dullards with great pensions were herding people thru the magic box, trying to stop people smuggling elephants or some such.

Works pretty well--no elephants got through. (Well, none that we know of.) Oh, then it crashed.

It costs that because the gov't pays it for half of America. And, the other half have already paid something; it's in their interest to reap the greatest return from their fixed pre-paid investments. They don't care what anything costs.

The market is highly regulated and restricted--the gov't mandates everything, limits supply of doctors, controls drugs and prescriptions, blah blah blah.

It could be a lot cheaper. It's amazing medicine manages as well as it does, all said--we've got the best in the world.

You can bet that many businesses are quite happy with this "public good" too, though, as it directly benefits their bottom lines.

True, pretty much all government programs are, by definition, underfunded. :-)

Still, I have a hard time imagining what shape our country would be in today without, e.g., a public educational system; it seems quite unlikely our standard of living would be as high.

IMDB gives it pretty mediocre reviews (6.3/10), but I will eventually check it out on DVD.

Ever played Bioshock? It's premise is that some Objectivist-types set up their own hidden underwater city ("Rapture"), which ends up being destroyed due to a war of greed between the original rulers and a group similar to the mob. Throw in a bunch of zombie-like mutants, and you're all set for a night of carnage! :-)

That movie rocked. Less detail than the book but much livelier, and even plenty of action for dem's what needs action.
