CODEC design forum/newsgroup

Hi,

I'm looking for (better) ideas for the design of efficient CODECs. Any pointers to places to find such discussions?

Thx,

Loading thread data ...

comp.dsp is pretty dense with folks that do this sort of thing.

Why am I not happy that they have found common ground?

Oooo! Excellent idea! And, it reminds me of someone who would probably be the perfect contact!

Thanks!

Hmmm... yes, that's a possibility. But, "compression" often operates in a different environment and in bigger "units"/blocks.

E.g., you can "leisurely" examine the data -- multiple passes, if you want. You usually have more resources available for temporaries (dictionaries, etc.).

OTOH, CODECs tend to know that the data involved is ephemeral -- being used (and "discarded") "now".

I'll keep it in mind. I'm in touch with an old friend who's a wiz at this sort of thing. If he hasn't already done something like this, he's undoubtedly

*thought* about the issues involved. He's also a great pragmatist so wouldn't get caught up in "textbook solutions" -- "How can we *bend* this solution given the *exact* nature of the problem domain?"

Thanks!
