Go to your local dollar store and find some glassware for $1/each. When faced with a need for multiple "pencil holders", it was easier, cheaper and classier to find some nice cobalt blue glasses to place the pens, pencils, tiny screwdrivers, dental explorers, drafting pencils, sharpies, magic markers, xacto knives, etc.

And, being opaque, you don't see all the cruft that inevitably accumulates in the bottoms!

Now, I just need to find some *cubes*...

I rarely use pens and pencils nowadays but I keep them in a large blue vessel, ashtray like but larger. Loved it as a kid so my mom brought it all the way to Cologne when I lived there and she came to visit.

It makes sense that the Beaker People would crush more primitive cultures that used shoe boxes or Tupperware or plastic drawer organizers.

I cut the bottom 14cm off our 3L HDPE milk bottles. They're rectangular, 10cm x 15cm, and free. You need deep drawers to stack them (6" depth), but they stack ok inside most bigger boxes, and you can have half a dozen on the workbench without it becoming hard to work.

The problem with plastic bins is that decades of stuff piles up in the bottom, and I can't find it, so I buy yet more stuff from Amazon.

I'm optimistic that the clear, tall, flat-bottom glass beakers will solve this problem, at least for long skinny objects.

I use giant blue Uline bins as "project boxes", for big stuff like PCBs and transformers and alternators, keeper-stuff associated with each product development.

And of course Royal Danish Butter Cookie cans for small loose stuff and EMI-sensitive prototyping.

The brilliant thing about the Carlisle bins is that they're clear as glass all the way to the bottom, so that doesn't happen.

So get romantic and buy her some beakers.

I would not store x-acto knives on an elevated shelf in something that can tip over.

Store flat in a drawer.

And stick my hand in there? I could get cut and bleed to death!

Or, sheathed blade *up*, in a container that can only *topple* onto the surface that is supporting it. That way you can clearly see it and access it without having to extend yourself.

Storing anything that can break (e.g., glass) in a place where it can fall AND BREAK is contraindicated!

Best to stick to plastic sippy cups for your dinner Chardonnay. A real wineglass could tip over and shatter and slice your femoral artery and ruin the whole event.

Eat with plastic spoons. Can't be too careful.

I don't get injured much by x-acto knives. It's the curved pointy stainless tweezers that draw blood.

The other common bench injury comes from holding onto a hot wire while soldering, when it's tempting to let go and wreck the joint. It's only pain.

The felt tip ones should be head down otherwise they dry out. Greetings, Werner

With a transparent beaker, I can see the colors even tip-down.

Incidentally if there's one product that's likely in the top ten of commercial products that the greatest amount person-hours have been invested in the engineering of, the aluminum food & beverage can is probably up there.
