AT&T emails disappearing

Can you do things the other way around -- check your analogconsultants.com (1and1) e-mail via Thunderbird, and have PacBelll forward anything heading for that e-mail address to analogconsultants.com? So at least over time, as more people update their e-mail address to analogconsultants.com, PacBell becomes less and less of a problem?

In my line of work I am sometimes contacted by engineers from way back when, now at a different employer. They dig through their Rolodex, there was this guy with the weird long family name that got us out of a similar mess, where is he? Ah, there. Out comes a yellowed index card from 19-sumpthin.

Believe it or not but I had one email recently to my old CompuServe address from the early 90's. Luckily the guy found my phone number and called, wondering why his email bounced.

Yes, but such a forward or any change for that matter could only be achieved if I "upgrade" to some sort of Yahoo super duper special mail service. For that, they want to have personal data which is only shared with "affiliated" ... . Looks like milking to me. Also, the registration pages hint that they will then "transfer" all my mail, whatever that means. Spooky. No way.

I'll have to fix it with some sort of what we RF guys call a combiner, so the PacBell stuff looks the same as before to their server :-)

Mmm... so perhaps stop e-mail forwarding from analogconsultants.com, and add that account to Thunderbird with both the analogconsultants.com and pacbell.com going to the same global inbox?

They have some sort of undivulged authentication method. Faked E-mails are kicked back along the path to the last legitimate server, with warnings that ALL their mail will be blocked if they can't manage the s*it. So it gradually ripples back to the real offender, usually some sort of "anonymous remailer" who get their balls cut off ;-) ...Jim Thompson

I understand the attraction there, but even if they send you an e-mail and it bounces, I would think their next (or often even first) step would be to punch your name and/or company into Google and that'll find you lickety-split? "Analog consultants" is a rather generic name, but "Joerg Schulze-Clewing" sure isn't.

Hey, hit #2 here on you is interesting:

- seems to me that the interviewer should have asked just when it was you were looking for your "new job" there, even if the advice is relatively timeless. Granted, it doesn't seem like you have much difficulty finding work today (ahem!), but I still expect that today it's more challenging than in the late '80s there?

That always works. But some upper level folks really don't use a computer much and some of my assignments are of the rather touchy kind. Someone screwed up, it was in-house, and the boss wants me to discreetly fix it. So he isn't going to hand his secretary my name "Hey, find this guy", because then the word is out.

Duane is in the recruiter business so job hunts is always the tag line. He just asked me to share with others what could work in their situation, when they are out of a job. The only time I ever actively looked for a job was a few months before finishing my masters, for my first job.

Not really. I did see companies postponing projects but the number of "The s..t has hit the fan, please help" situations remained roughy the same. Also, from the 80's until now a whole lot of analog talent has moved to retirement, assisted living, or is no longer with us. So the pool is shrinking.

That's exactly what I'll try. But you can't combined them to react sequentially to things like the "get mail" button. You have to be inside the right account for that to work.

I am surprised email programs like Thunderbird can't do that because it is a very common problem these days.

Thunderbird is supposed to be a knock-off of Eudora, so multiple ACCOUNTS are allowed, you just need to make all the required entries, and CHECK THE BOX "Check Mail" ;-)

Aha. Thanks! That was what I needed, "linked" email accounts inside (sort of) one account. Now I have to figure out how to do this with the least risk of blowing folders into smittereens and it should work. That would get Yahoo off my back.

I have bookmarked this page. Got a design review coming, maybe after that I can do it.
