Are metal halide lamps dangerous?

May 03, 2019 8 Replies

I retrieves some nice 1kW High Bay lamps from Dump. I am going to retrofit them with LEDs for my shop. I am a little nervous about removing the meta l halide lamps. It seems the first one had become a little loose form it's socket. I am wondering if the bulb is fractured when I try to remove if i t will explode.

Any input?

They are high pressure lamps & can sometimes go bang. The pressure won't be as bad cold of course.

No idea, how about some gloves and safety glasses in case.

Also wear a scarf.

At least this was the early 1960's recommendation for carrying around a TV picture tube.

Right! be safe, I never thought much about my neck. (No big carnivores where I live.)

Ok, thank you all.

I will get all dressed up with extreme safety gear before I attempt to unsc rew lamp. I realize pressure cold isn't very high. Pv=nRT and so forth. I don't want to do anything stupid - again. (Last stupid thing I did was bite into a full oxygen bottle with a cut off saw.)

Leather coat and gloves and a full polycarbonate face shield are standard attire for people changing xenon arc lamps in cinema projectors etc.. I'm not sure what happens if you drop it and it explodes into your legs or nether regions though.

perhaps take it out back and deal to it with BB gun or automatic centre-punch through a (pre drilled) sheet of plywood, It can only explode once.

When I tried casting out nines I made a hash of it.

iirc those have about 500psi inside even cold.
