I read in sci.electronics.design that Dave wrote (in ) about 'Any DIY balun info for S-video to Cat5 conversion?', on Sat, 3 Sep 2005:
So try it and see if the mismatches DO create visible distortion. In any case, while you can't afford the insertion loss of proper matching pads, a strategically-placed resistor or two can help a lot in some cases.

Yup, and you can always turn up the brightness control to suit.

Ahem, if you are talking about a frequency range of 10:1 it is simple. But for a really wide frequency range it's more complicated. Number of twists, how they are arranged around the circle of the core and, most of all, the core itself. The core often has to be a specialty version like tape wound material etc.
I have seen transformers that were perfected by wee little tweaks of the wires by means of plastic pliers. Work and work until it looks just right on the analyzer. It's like tuning the engine of a classic sports car. "Only uncle Leroy knows how to do that".
