When it was free, when he attended, they had admission standards. Then they started open admissions and charging money.

I toured CCNY in the 80's. I picked up a school newspaper assuming the writers would be relatively articulate. I couldn't find a sentence without a grammatical error.

What Bernie wants to "bring back" is what never existed. No standards and at no charge.

I remember open admissions: freshmen class sizes of 40,000, students remaining freshman for 6 years maximum before they were discontinued IIRC... You're wrong about no standards though. The academic standards remained the same despite the absence of admission standards, that's what made the open admissions policy a failure- duh.

No one said anything about open admissions, the political issue is about access to free higher education and not free access to higher education. That's gonna be hard for you to grasp.

If you made college tuition free and anybody could get in, colleges would be flooded with students. You've got to limit admissions to suitably qualified applicants to hold the volume of students admitted to a number that existing colleges can cope with.

Correct. Since I know precisely why it's wrong, it probably counts as a typ o, rather than a grammatical error, but it is still an error.

That's not a grammatical error, it's a typo. It's is a contraction of it is , whereas its is a possessive pronoun third person singular: he she it->his hers its. I know this goes against your inclination to use his's hers's an d its's, but do try.
