AD9501

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone knows a possible solution to my problem. Analog Devices is obsoleting the AD9501 which is a digitally programmable delay generator and I still require that functionality. Are there any IC's which could do the same function? I am thinking of maybe doing something in an FPGA, or a clock deskew. Would anyone have some ideas? Its the fine resolution which is the problem.

Analog gives you 10ps of resolution, not easy to match.

There are some ECL delay chips, from OnSemi and Micrel, but they are nowhere drop-in replacements.

You can do it yourself with a linear or sort-of-linear ramp, a comparator, and a dac. Takes a bit more room, of course.

There's also a heap of packaged delay-line companies.

They also give you rather more jitter, which you wouldn't want to match.

ON-Semiconductor offers the MC100EP195 with a programmable delay of up to 10.2nsec and a resolution of 10psec. The delay range is a lot shorter than you could get out of the AD9501, so you might need to combine it with a 100MHz clock and a counter to get longer delays.

The delay you get out of the MC100EP195 is temperature dependent, which may be a nuisance, depending on your application. For closed loop clock de-skew, this might not be a problem.

IS obsoleting it? It has been out of stock, non-orderable for some time now. Some of the vultures claim to have them, but I'd be suspicious of getting counterfeit or salvaged junk.

We used banks of them in a previous project, and are now redesigning to use FPGAs with fast SERDES components.

And, yes, they were quite ideal for our purposes, too bad they are gone.
