A real puzzle...

So true. When I was a kid in WV "salt and pepper" was de rigeur. And, in the '40's, black help in white households was widespread, no matter the income level. We had a black nanny/cook. And I was "poor" until I graduated MIT.

Interesting that King George showed up just in time to see them mopping up.

And they're talking Federal relief money for these rich primadonnas that don't have sense enough to buy full coverage insurance in southern California. That's pretty disgusting.

Thanks, Rich

Its nice to see that Reconstruction is alive and well in the South.

Paul Hovnanian mailto:Paul@Hovnanian.com ------------------------------------------------------------------ Yeah, but you\'re taking the universe out of context.

Not really. The local government has no authority over funding levels (Congress does), design (Army Corps of Engineers) or operation (ACE again). The Feds tell them what they are getting. They basically get to take the blame when things get screwed up.

The governor asked for assistance from the national guard, which was (still is) operating under the authority of the Pentagon (time of war, remember). What was released was woefully under equipped (most of their stuff is in Iraq).

Not really my ass. They got the funds and blew them away on frivolities. Ask Larkin, he knows the specifics, since he lived there.

[snip]

Please tell us WHEN the governor requested the assistance.

You sound like that POS Lt. Governor of CA who made similar statements, and wouldn't back down when shown the actual numbers... 2% of the CA NG are deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.

Why do you like to lie so?

I hate pouring tax dollars down a rat hole.

True enough. But take a look at the high wages Toyota is paying before you gloat.

Unions are pretty much a thing of the past, except for those old American industries they haven't destroyed yet.

Regularly here in AZ union certification elections fail. So our POS Democrat Congressman Mitchell has proposed doing away with the secret ballot in certification elections.

Democrat == POS

And in Cal, they pulled a whole bunch off of border patrol duty as soon as the fires became serious!

Charlie

Not too many people show up in Hawaii when there's a major storm/flood there.

Not enough electoral votes, I guess.

Michael

So do I. Why don't you get off of welfare?

Through the 3rd quarterly payment, Sept 17, I've paid in just shy of $76,000... what have you paid?

If you look at internal migration patterns in the US (not including immigration), IIRC, the North is losing people and the South is gaining.

Where the unions ain't? ;-)

If I lived there, I'd install a pump and use my swimming pool to keep the house from burning down! Sure, I might have to invest in a SCUBA tank or two, or some fancy automation, but that's gotta be cheaper than replacing the whole house??

I'm sure is more frighful to live through it, than watch it on TV. But I'm seeing pictures of houses one next to the other. One burned to a crisp, the other, seemingly ready for a Thanksgiving Day bird. What gives??

I read an article a few years back where an engineer built a firestorm-proof house in the area. Stucco on the sides, tile roof and installable covers for all glass and eve vents. It worked.

Right, a typical Democrat.

Yes, there is a reason for poverty; because they're sitting on their ass...

Eats can be had anywhere. AIUI, NOLA is having trouble getting the chefs back. They've found better employment elsewhere. Don't blame them.

Keith

Everyone who has ever tried that is either dead, or has endangered firefighters and distracted them from fighting fires, since they have to rescue his lame ass, which hinders the firefighting operation.

Don't do it.

Fire-resistant construction, clearing underbrush, that sort of thing.

There is at least one neighborhood that the whole neighborhood survived having the main part of one of the fires go right over them, burning everything around them.

The residents had spent the past year clearing underbrush and scrub to about a 200-yard perimeter.

Cheers! Rich

I'm not on it. I never have been in one form or another.

I pay my share. And as I don't do work on government contracts anymore, I'm a net contributor to the system.

Be that as it may, every one that i have actually met has been decent and sociable. Even quite likable. Nor have met any that are willfully ignorant.

Not I. The two criteria are orthogonal.

Could you put a date to that? I am looking for the earliest in order to give proper attributation.

Isn't that the reason for the 'W' (was originally a non-slavery part of V)?

NORTH Carolina. ;-)

Let's see, Altona Victoria, Cambridge Ontario, Princeton Indiana, and Buffalo West Virginia seem to be fairly "North". ;-)
