3 stage amp?

Hi, I am a Junior in an Electrical Engineering program, and in my class the final project is to design a 3 stage amplifier. We are graded on the gain of the amplifier, and the quality of the output. I am excited about this project, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me of any references that you think would help in the design process? Thanks


LT1028 is three stages IIRC. Maybe there was a paper on it.

Google is pretty handy. Try searching on "amplifier tutorial" or "amplifier design" or, well, you'll think of something.

Or, you might find something in the textbook or at your engineering library.

Google search for "plastic tiger amplifier" and "lil tiger amplifier". Assumes 1) you want to build an *audio* amplifier, and 2) you know how to find replacements for obsolete parts.

And can find the 40 year old magazines.

and 3) you can figure out why it was referred to as the "flaming tiger amplifer". They had a somewhat evil reputation for burning up when in use.

The 'tiger' was pretty decent though the 'universal tiger' was a flame thrower.

Most likely a three transistor amp. (At least that's what we had to do.)

Design it with X input impedance, Y voltage gain and Z 3dB frequency. X,Y and Z would change from year to year. I remember that our design was done before they told us in class about the benefits of negative feed back....

Those are scans. I knew that 'South West Technical Products' had put them on line, and that they originally supplied the kits in the '60s & '70s. I said magazines. Some people still have the original paper versions. I built the 'Tiger' from the magazine, not from a kit while I was in high school.

The basic circuit was lifted directly from a late '60s RCA transistor databook. It was in the next couple editions, as well. Some crappy industrial PA amps used the same circuit and were not reliable. I scrapped more than one with most of the transistors shorted, and holes burnt through the PC board when the emitter resistors caught fire.

The 40411 transistor is a 100V version of the 2N3055. The 40409 &

40410 driver transistors have been obsolete for 20 years or more. The other transistors used in the predriver stage are easy to sub.

I also built the preamp from the magazine, which was another RCA design from the same databook. About all they did was lay out a PC board and create a BOM for both projects. this was typical of hobby electronics magazines at that time.

It's amazing how often the same few 45-year-old old audio amp circuits are repeated with minor, usually silly, variations.

What needs amplification?

You need to know that first. Your first stage may not even be electronic.

I HAD those magazines when they were new but I was in high school at the folks house and the mags have long since been in a landfill (before we recycled). I was just pleased to see them in _any_ form.

I built a pair of the Tigers - I think from kits - teamed up with the

5 band frequency equalizer from Popular Electronics. My first phono preamp in that box was opamp based and poor. The 2 transistor clone from a Heath amp was much better.

It has a lot of gain; just what you asked.

Determine the resistor values as design exercise.

Advanced students can add arbitrary number of stages, as long as the total number of transistors is the odd.
