His meter is not a problem, his exercise and the lack of battery supply may be the problem.
I used 3-4 meters to see all actions the same time. One of my meters is a Chinese meter, pretty accurate to me to check the Ic. I use JFluke and Soar meters as well for reference. If you don't go down to a micro, then Chinese meter is fine.

I have a Chinese meter over here and opened it to see the inside. All ranges were adjustable with cheap potmeters.
