I'm thinking of getting a cheapo crimp tool for modular plugs.
Would a crimp tool for 8-way modular plugs (RJ45) usually work for
6-way (RJ11) and 4-way (4P4C) plugs?

No. Some crimpers do have a separate insertion sockets for crimping 6 way and 4 way plugs but if yours only has a hole for 8 way connectors don't try crimping the smaller units in this hole.
You need a crimping tool like this to do all sizes

Most of the time, a single tool covers those. not sure about that 4P4C ?
