Caller ID with serial interface

I would have thought this would be easier to find. I've been searching all morning for a caller ID box that includes a serial interface that I can connect to a PC.

I've found a small handful of what look like professional units, in the multi-hundred dollar (US) range, but I'm really just looking for something I can use in the home on a single phone line. More along the $50 price range.

I was able to find a couple promising units, but no information was available on price or ordering.

Does anyone know where I can get a self-contained caller ID processor that can send the caller ID info out a serial connection. It would be nice if it was able to include a notification of on/off hook as well.

PS: I'm not opposed to creating a Basic Stamp version myself, if anyone can recommend a good all-in-one IC.

Thanks,

Am i missing something ? I use a harris chipset based US robtics modem and a old '486 and a little basic program as an advanced caller ID that route calls and delivers messages based upon who calls.

It's _already_ serial as it comes off the phone line. It's 1200 baud

202 type modem tones. All you have to do is demodulate it and feed it to your serial port. You can use any 202 type modem or use a chip that can do this. I can't remember which, but there's the XR2206 or XR2211 chips. But it would probably be easier and cheaper to just use a cheap callerID box and tap into the right point after it has been demodulated. See comp.dcom.telecom.tech for more advice.

As if you're going to be able to enforce those terms. Right...

For example, I have a US Robotics "Sportster Faxmodem with x2" 56k external modem. This will give me caller id info, but will not do either of the following:

- Call Waiting caller id - Line in-use status (indicate when the line is taken off-hook by some phone/device on the line - not when the modem itself is on/off-hook).

Is there a modem that will provide these features?

These are done by the stand-alone units, but I can't find one of those for less than about $200 (I think there should be one in the $25 to $50 range, but then I haven't built one...).

Thanks for any recommendations.

I had a kit to do this from "Weeder Technologies". I think it used a PIC and a modem chip; it was powered by a wall-wart and had phone line in and RS-232 out. This was six or seven years ago. I don't think it could do call waiting ID. I just left a terminal program open on that port to read the data. It worked fine - I ended up needing the serial ports for other things and I bought a stand-alone display.

As far as on hook/off hook, there are lots of circuits floating around the Web that show you how to turn on an LED when the phone is off hook. Adapt one for an input bit on your parallel port.

You might also ask over at comp.dcom.telecom.tech .
