Spice 3f5

Is there a binary for Spice 3f5 somewhere, that I can download, that is compiled for windows.

I don't know about a 3f5 binary for Windows, but as a former user of the

3f5 source distribution from Berkeley, I will say that since starting to use LTSpice free from Linear Technology, I have no plans to return to native 3f5. LTSpice is based on 3f5, and contains the all important (to me) arbitrary source, but has improved convergence, better front and back ends (schematic capture and plotting), and provides behavioral models of logic devices.

I'm not sure why you would want native 3f5.

I dont need the user interface. I use AutoCAD for the graphics interface. I use notepad for input.

Hallo Bob,

Even if you work with netlists, you will be happy with the waveform viewer of LTspice. It's much more powerful than what you can get for SPICE 3Fx. Also LTspice is more compatible to (P)SPICE than SPICE 3Fx.

If you don't like productive and state of the art software, you should go with SPICE 3Fx of course.

I like productive state of the art software as well as anybody else. I am a little tapped out at the moment I just spent 1200 dollars on software. I only use spice occasionally so I would not really want to spend any money on it I can live without the user interface.

LTspice is for free. You don't need any money to get it. Maybe hundred thousand have it already.

Just download it from here. It's only 7MB.

Hello Bob, This means LTspice has stopped because it couldn't find the solution. There may be many reason for that. Do you have a GND in your circuit? It's required in (LT)SPICE. If the naswer is yes, firstly try the Alternate-solver. Control Panel->SPICE->Solver Alternate.

If it still fails, you can either put the .asc-file in your reply or send it to me for checking.

I could solve the problem with a less ideal transistor model. Just change the transistor models from NPN to NPN1 and PNP to PNP1. Then add the two SPICE-lines to your schematic.

Same malfunction Iteration limit reached. I guess I will make a .cir file and see what pspice does to it.

You have to reset LTspice to the Normal-solver.

Control Panel -> SPICE -> Reset to Default Values

Sometimes, life is cruel.

If you really want to punish yourself by forgoing LTspice, you might try XSpice from Georgia Tech. That's about as 3f5-ish as it gets.

(When you hit an iteration limit, you usually have done something wrong.)

Transient analysis seems to work fine. That is the important one to me. I now have enough information to prototype a little 5 watt class A audio amplifier. It only has a quiescent power dissipation of 45 watts. and peak of 90 watts.

Class A audio power amplifiers are fairly rare. Recalculating the efficiency I come up with about 25%.

5 Watts out for 90 Watts in is more like 5.6%. That seems a little bit excessive. PushPull Class A can reach 50% at max. output. A good discussion is in Douglas Self: Audio Power Design Handbook 3rd ed. isbn 0-7506-5636-0

That said, I cannot claim to be all too rational about this topic since I own an old Krell KST-100 that needs 20 TO-3s to get rid of the heat.

The quiescent current throught the output transistors is equal to the peak load current. one transistor/transistor bank is a constant current source equal to the peak load current. The other transistor/transistor bank is the driven side with a current limit of twice the peak load current.

Assume 3 amps quiescent current , 12 volts peak out 4 ohm load and rail to rail output. Quiescent power dissipation is 72 watts max output is 18 watts rms efficiency of output stage is 25%, add the power for the losses and driver less than 25% is the max efficiency.
