The Brat is at Cornell, in Ithaca, where 9 degrees F with 30 mph wind is normal lately. My sweet little baby girl called last week and said, among other news, that she just bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee so she wouldn't have to walk to softball practice in the snow.

Well, Jim, if it's any comfort we were looking at Winter Wonderland starting yesterday night. 20 miles up the hill you have to chain up the car. It's all white in the foothills and freaking cold, the wood stove has to crank non stop. Thing is, we'll have to let it cool off at some point to get the ashes out.

But I won't complain, things can be worse. This morning we had to say our final good-bye to the retired guide dog of our neighbors.

Global warming sucks AND blows both at the same time! - Also there seems to be a growing consensus that global warming is due to the sun getting hotter, apparently it's temperature varies cyclically on a period of 1000's of years. While pollution is significant - so is the smoke, ash and minerals blown into the air by volcanic eruptions. Not to mention the fact that some scientists claim that grazing animals produce nearly as much greenhouse gas as vehicles - and not to be outdone, one natural world documentary claimed that termites are even worse!!! Who the hell do you believe these days?!

Here in suburban San Diego, we got enough hail and sleet today so that the streets were covered with a layer of white for a few minutes. When I got home from the bookstore, there were piles of ice pellets at the bases of all the eave-gutter drains. My daughter saw the one by the driveway, yelled "Snowballs" and grabbed a handful to drop down her brother's back.

The last time it snowed in DOWNTOWN San Diego and stuck to the ground for the briefest of moments was 17 November 1943 ... the day I was born in Naval Hospital, Balboa Park, San Diego.

Don't forget that all plants produce methane. That was a recent Nature article (12 Jan '06). They said it accounts for potentially 10-20% of atmospheric methane.

No, there have been recent studied that show that living plants release sizable amounts of methane too. It's been known for ages that plants release hydrocarbons, which is why we have the "Smokey Mountains."

This probably means that our bureaucrats in CA could some day be pondering another means to squeeze money out of us. Some kind of plant tax where an "official" (newly hired, with a fat pension benefit and health plan from cradle to grave) swings by and assesses the number and size of your yard plants. Of course, it would not be called a tax. Vegetation volatile release fee or something like that. When they think they can do it with cows I don't see a reason why they'd stop there.
