When and if you do try the Knoppix Live CD, the startup command line will be.
knoppix screen=1024x768
You can watch the startup and auto detect procedure. If there is a hardware problem it will likely stick at that point, and after a timeout period, show the failure... or just freeze.

Dpends where you go. Coastal areas have had a wee bit lately. Inland from the ranges have had next to nothing.
