gerbv is a very competent free viewer that is part of the GNU EDA project. It is easy to find, just do a google.

There is (was?) a free gerber to pdf perl script - google for gerber2pdf.

It's not a viewer, but it lets you move the problem to other technologies. (We often print on transparent slides and hold them up to the light.)

The non-free version of Adobe Acrobat has a compare command that lets you see what changed between 2 pdf files.

As I recall gerber2pdf only works with 274X format. No too flexible that.

All the tools I've worked with recently generate 274X format. It seems like the obvious way to make sure the aperature data matches the plot data.

How many tools/systems don't yet use 274X? Is there some complication that I don't know about?

If the tools you use are all 274X then this should be no problem. 274D is 'old' and not really necessary anymore although some PCB cad offers you the choice of output formats, fixing apertures, etc. for certain manufacturing situations. If you have not needed 274D too-date you are not going to need it in the future. Also there is probably a freebie 274D to X conversion utility around somewhere ('though I do not know of one myself), perhaps someone out there can point to one.

However if you only want to view/print the Gerber's why not use a viewer - they are made for the job.

If you convert them to pdfs, then you can put them on a web site and people without gerber viewers can easily look at them. That might be convenient for some people/organizations.

I presumed that either it was anothers artwork (and hence only the gernbers available), or it is to check their own gerber file generation.

In the first case others artwork should not be published, in the second a viewer would suffice since the cad would also produce various other outputs formats for publishing etc use.
