Playing Youtube music video under Raspbian

Just thought I'd try this but no luck so far.

Apparently I need Flash or HTML5.

I have followed one thread and installed Epiphany and that gets as far as showing the video ready to play, but will not play.

I can see various work rounds.

Is there a simple 2015 solution?

Cheers

Loading thread data ...

Firefox is available as source and has HTML5 but no idea if it will compile up for a Pi.

Thanks - next issue is identifying which stream to play?

My normal route to youtube videos/music is to search within a web browser then select the item, and when it starts to play I click to go full screen (if I want).

So some kind of search interface which links into livestreamer would be good.

I know the Pi is a DIY platform, just looking to see if there is "one I prepared earlier".

I can't try that myself now but this site:

states that epiphany should handle youtube well.

Is your Raspian up to date?

Other than that: kodi (former xbmc) with the youtube plugin works. video plays fine, but the menu is slow. YMMV.

the livestreamer that David suggested could be started through a browser plugin, i guess.

I upgraded everything in sight then installed Epiphany. This is on a B+. As far as I can tell this is the latest of everything.

When I navigate to Youtube I get a grumbling screen saying my browser is out of date and offering an upgrade to the most common browsers.

When I select a video to play it gets as far as the right arrow icon in the middle of the screen, but clicking on that seems to achieve nothing.

I will try kodi next.

I naively assumed that as the Pi came with an XBMC build (now kodi I assume) to run it as a media player that the standard Raspbian would have everything sorted by default.

Anyway, onwards and upwards :-)

Can you not spoof the User Agent string to fool it into working?
