If there is no ice at end of September, it just means that we got away with multi year ice.

It doesn't imply, as some alarmists would want to imply, that the Arctic waters will not remain ice free all year around.

Each winter there are going to be single year ice in those waters. Now that we have got rid of multi year ice, it is easier to compare the spring ice extent from year to year.
