A certain proportion of immigrants are nuts, but then again an appreciable proportion of the native population is nuts too.
Before you can get too excited by the bad behaviour of an individual immigr ant you have to work out whether his being an immigrant had more to do with the problem than him being nuts.
Julian Barnes isn't good at making this kind of distinction. The fact that he can find evidence that fits with his world view isn't strong evidence th at his world-view is correct, and in fact a preference for anecdotal eviden ce is one of the clearer markers of the right-wing nitwit.
