Have you ever heard of Herbert George Wells? He was a British author well known (by people who aren't idiots) for publishing _The Time Machine_ in 1895. He previously published another less well-known story involving a time machine, _The Chronic Argonauts_, in 1888. But even he was anticipated by the Spaniard Enrique Gaspar y Rimbau's 1887 _El Anacron=F3pete_ which AFAIK is the first published example of the concept of mechanically-assisted time travel.

The first published account of non-mechanical time travel I know of was written by another Brit, Samuel Madden; _Memoirs of the Twentieth Century_. He wrote it in 1733 before America even existed.

"A Brief History of Time" is a good book in any format, but the new release of it is far better. There are also videos associated with the new one.

The best thing about it is that it is post Hubble Telescope, and the first was prior to it.
