I see Google Groups has got even more irritating.

In the past, I would view Usenet in Google Groups to see if E-S or my killfile were being over enthusiastic. Now Google Groups have disabled "Show original message" so I can't see what the message headers are, or why they might have offended my killfile.

It's a shame how many users have been driven away from so many newsgroups (including my favourite, alt.folklore.computers) by these yahoos. It appears that CSRPi has become home for a.f.c refugees, thread drift and all. I use slrn, and have fortunately found a way to drop the crap; I've added stanzas like this to ~/News/Score:

You're using Thunderbird, and I believe many other Thunderbird users have killfiled all posts originating from Google Groups as a solution, but perhaps that's not what you'd call a "good way to block 'em".

Many news servers have also started implementing spam filtering, or blocking all posts from Google Groups like the one I'm using did.

Alas there are also GOOD posts from people (foolishly) using GoogGroups. Don't want to burn them

What's NEEDED are more servers, pref in countries kinda off the map. Also needed, more alternate ports to thwart blocking. Yea, you can do it as web pages, but they're computationally/bandwidth expensive compared to NNTP.

you appear to be using thunderbird (even though it's an old version, all of the following should apply)

create a new address book, e.g. called "googlegroups-whitelist", add all the good authors email addrs to it

create a message new filter e.g. called "selective-googlegroups" at the top level of your news server (giganews? earthlink?) with the following

match ALL of the following

message-id: CONTAINS @googlegroups.com

from: ISN'T IN addr book googlegroups-whitelist

and actions of

mark as READ tag message as #6

if you don't see message-id: in the list of fields, click customise... and add it

you may already use tag #6 for other purposes, adjust accordingly, or don't bother tagging, I tag them as find it helpful to see how the filters are performing.

I took a close look at some of this spam, and found that it contains an "Injection-Info: google..." header that isn't in legitimate messages, whether they're from a Google user or not. By adding the following stanza to ~/News/Score (I'm using slrn), I'm able to drop the spam while retaining legitimate messages with gmail.com on the From: line.

Fore some reason injection info didnt work on thunderbird, but message ID contains googlegroups did IIRC.

The advantage with filtering based on the message-id: header is that it's always included in the OVERVIEW.FMT set of headers returned by the LIST and OVER NNTP commands, so the client doesn't have to issue extra commands to (try) and retrieve additional headers that may, or may not, be present ...

Any idea how I might do this with tin, or do I need to shitcan tin and replace it with something else? Its filtering appears to be restricted to a handful of common header lines (such as From and Subject) and doesn't appear to allow filtering on just any header line. What little documentation I've been able to find has been woefully inadequate.

(I'd been using trn (and rn before that) for decades, but it hasn't been updated in nearly as long and I can't get it to build on reasonably modern Gentoo Linux systems anymore.)

It worked great for me with slrn (on a non-Raspberry-Pi system).
