Blah. Bryan Lunduke just released a post that I fully agree with. Online bullying of retro computing companies and projects has gotten way out of control. Jesus - the Pi is the best thing to happen to SBC hobbyists - ever.

As an occasional Raspberry Forum attendee, I've noticed that some of their moderators are a bit close-down-happy - threads are closed down or people are warned they risk a banning. Yes I know some people don't know when to stop when they are line - so some control is often necessary.

What I've read of this pile up, on the whole I'm a bit sorry for RPI - the guy they've employed is an EX-copper. He just taken on a fun civvy job doing some fun maker stuff with Pi. Some of the "complaints" are just lame. Anyone in open source just has just got to get used that open-source, SW & HW, is just that OPEN and people will use it in ways you don't like. Get over it.

It took me a while to even pick up that this was the issue based on that article, which seems to assume that you already know that cops are some sort of Twitter/Mastodon pressure-point. All very peculiar if you ask me, but I don't really understand the appeal of the platforms, so perhaps it's unsurprising that I don't understand the people who use them.

Indeed, and cops are obviously going to set up any surveillance system they want one way or other anyway, they might as well contribute to open-source projects while doing so rather than funding alternative proprietary systems which others can't apply to other applications.

How? Just because some danger-haired hamplanets are upset over Raspberry Pi's hiring decisions doesn't mean they've done something objectively wrong.

Exactly so: I've worked with ex-coppers without problems, even if some looked a bit wall-eyes at the mere sniff of weed.

Now, if this ex-copper had FSD tattoos on his arm or was a Putin relative, than there may be a case for complaint, but AFAIK this guy hasn't and isn't.

This is completely beside the point. Yes, there were some inevitable rude comments but the uproar was about them placing front & centre that he was a surveillance cop (I'm sure we need them sometimes), some readers posting civilised & legitimate criticism and then Pi Inc having a "block everyone & their friends" breakdown while replying with condescending insults. *They* were the ones behaving like immature assholes. Very unprofessional.

What they did objectively wrong was how they handled this whole thing. What they also did wrong from a PR point of view in my opinion, was playing up that he was a surveillance cop. No problem mentioning it, but their emphasis was just asking for trouble.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the folks who try to inject their politics into other people's lives with the intent of destroying those lives (cancel culture) would just find something else to occupy their sad little lives.
