Westinghouse W32701 27" LCD TV - Help

Hi,

I am trying to help out my in laws, they purchased a Westinghouse Digital W32701 LCD TV sometime in 2005. The set failed shortly before Christmas this past year - and they were advised that it was not worth repairing by Best Buy in December of 2007 - they say it needs a main board and inverter, the estimated cost of repair was over $600.

I am not going to go into the whole story, but like many of these lower end sets made in China, there is very little support available after the warranty has expired.

Based on emails to Westinghouse Digital, they don't sell component (IC's) parts - they won't provide schematics. The set is essentially disposable in their eyes after the warranty.

Ok - here is what I have found. The set will not power up. There is a Delta

12 volt brick - output looks good. I don't have a schematic, but found several voltages missing and a 3 amp fuse open. After replacing a handful of electroytics in the power supply section - and replacing 2 surface mount inductors (12 volt lines to invertor?) - It looks like I have a working 5 volt supply, 12 volts, -12 volts (looks like its just for the audio amp), all of the 3 terminal regulars on the board have something on their outputs 3.3v, 2.5, there is even a 7809 with 9 volts on its output.

Based on what I can see - the main board is controlled by an 8 bit microcontroller - labelled U19_1. This is a Winbond W78E86-40. As expected the power switch, function switches, and power LED connect to this. Its getting 5 volts, its reset line is low - but there is no sign of life. The line to the power switch should be pulled up - but its low. This is a socketed PLCC - when I pull the chip, the power LED and standby LED's light - and the line from the power switch goes high. I have the datasheet for this micro - and its pretty clear to me its dead. I have not had any luck sourcing a programmed chip. Westinghouse doesn't have the ability to provide an image of the firmware!! The chip has a sticker NLC30 V1.3-110 NTSC - the main board is an NLC27P1 VER:N1E. Westinghouse of course doesn't make it - Chi Mei makes the 27" LCD panel and seems to also owns Nexgen who may be the OEM (NLC27C1) . I can see that Apex, Logik use this same board in some of their sets?

Help - does anyone happen to have a schematic for the main board? Does anyone fix these, is there a solution to getting a programmed micro for this - or getting an image?

I realize there is probably more wrong with this set - but I can't even troubleshoot it any further without U19_1!

Thanks for the help and sorry for such a long POST!

Why should you apologize? At least you filled in all the details, which is more than most posters do.
