Sony TV KP53V85 remote problems

Hello

My Sony TV KP53V85 is not responding to the sony remote RM-Y905. I tried the following to troubleshoot the problem without any luck.

  1. Replaced batteries in the Remote
  2. Powered the TV down for 1 hour
  3. Reset the remote after removing batteries and depressing all buttons twice
  4. Got a new Sony remote & tried using that
  5. Used the DVD remote that the TV used to respond in the past.

I feel that the problem is in the TV. Any ideas on how I can get this problem fixed by my self or get it repaired.

Test the receiver, resolder reicever's solder and see with a scoop what signal is going out. Also test if the reicever is powered ! If you don't solve, change it, or try the uP !

Hum, if you open the set you can remove the principal board... and then locate the reicever, it's a black or violet thing that's in the direction of the front panel. If you can't locate it or if you can't open the tv, post some photos or at least refer what's wrote on the data-plate on the rear !

No disrespect intended, but if you can't locate the IR receiver without help you probably won't know what to do with it when you find it.

If you don't know what to do, I would not expect you to be able to remove the main circuit board assy of your set, and troubleshoot the IR receiver.

To test it, you will need a DVM, and a scope. The proper operating voltages have to be verified, and also the data stream leaving it, that is fed via a number of components to the uPC. It is possible for the IR receiver, or anything along the path to be defective. It is also possible that the uPC has failed.

Thanks for your feedback.

As I have ruled out troubleshooting the TV myself, what would be the next best option?

  1. Get the product repaired using a sony service center? In case the reciever inside the TV has to be replaced - how would it cost? OR
  2. Should I get Sony extended warranty - Any idea how much that would cost? I purchased my TV in July 2001.

I am trying to make a case for repairing the TV vs using the money towards the purchase of a new TV in the next 6 months.

Any suggestions will be greatly appareciated.

Really did you want to swap a tv that's 4 year's old and has only remote problems ? If you can't fix it or can't get it repaired, use it without remote ;-)

Any idea how much it would cost to have the IR reciever in the TV replaced. I called sony service & they mentioned that it will cast $40 to look at the unit & then they will provide an estimate. Any ideas from the team ??

Spend the $40.00 an get the estimate , maybe its not the IR Sensor. The set is worth the $40.00 estimate to find out , dont you think ?

I would think you should call the Sony service rep, and get an estimate. The problem may not be too expensive to repair. Even if it costs a hundred dollars to service the set, it is still worth to fix your set.

You'd best be sure that's what the problem is. What tests have you done to determine this?

The sony service rep came by and concluded that the remote related circuit inside the TV is bad & needs to be replaced. He mentioned that the cost of replacing the circuit would be $500 + labor. I am not sure that this is the right diagnosis of the problem as he did not even open the TV to check the circuit, all he did was tried using a different remote with the TV - which I had done in the past.

BTW he offered to buy the TV from me for $200 which I refused - what a scam

At this point I have decided to leave the TV as-is & use it without the remote. What do you folks think?
