Have two of the same model. Mode switch redone, timing reset, worn gears replaced. Plug it in, unit "resets" timing by making a short "attemt to reset timing". Bad load caddy sensor? Rono.

Rono: Could be the cassette tray timing but more likely the mode switch is not orientated correctly or the gears are not aligned properly. Since you have two machines you can use the one that you have not "fixed" as a guide to line things up. electricitym
Rono: Make certain that the center IR LED is emitting and that the BOT and EOT sensors are working. If the cassette tray is not fully "up" then the mechanism will try to load the cassette. Use the 2nd machine that you have not yet "fixed" as a guide. electricitym
