RCA 56" Projection blows SMPS!

Model # P56812BL, Chassis # CTC195A2, dead with 8-pin SMPS Reg IC U14101 TDA4605-3 blown apart, Q14101 IRF740 shorted, R14125 badly burnt, replaced these parts, horizontal output, convergence power supply, as well as secondary diodes in SMPS, all check fine, no other static shorts. Plug in unit, & instantly blows these parts again. Did I miss something? Thanks, Dani.

Looks like you missed some pretty basic troubleshooting, let alone the root cause of the failure. You plugged the unit in after replacing multiple parts in two main power circuits?

Start with the basic SMPS troubleshooting first, then move in to basic troubleshooting the horizontal output circuit.

If you are not sure how to properly load the SMPS to verify regulation on reduced AC line voltage or how to reduce the voltage to the horizontal output stage, you might want to contact a local technician to have a go at the set or another well experienced technician in your shop to assist.

You guys aren't much help, I must say! I do electronics for a living! I DID check all components in the SMPS, & couldn't find ANYTHING measuring out of the norm!

I wanted to know if could shed some light, or saw this before in this chassis!

ALL CHECKED OK!!!!!

Thanks, Dani.

Are you saying the SMPS checked and had proper operational waveforms and voltages when operating in standard test condition with a controlled current and voltage input with a properly selected test load?

Or are you saying that all you did was to check the components in the SMPS with a multimeter?

I have seen plenty of ctc195 series RTPV chassis have catastrophic failures on plug in. Everything from a cracked crt, hv splitter, flyback, hot shaping capacitor, to random out of spec parts in the SMPS, not to mention several with coolant leakage on the board. Even had one that had an I2C corruption problem with the HFREQ cause massive failures.

What are the results of standard troubleshooting to try and narrow down the SMPS or HOT stage and which waveforms were bad.

You've got to have a sense of humor AND a thick skin.
