Magnavox TV Repair

Sep 13, 2006 5 Replies

Hi,

This would be my first attempt at repairing a TV. The TV works just fine except that when it is switched on, the picture runs in horizontal lines towards the top of the screen. It takes about 1/2 hour for the picture to settle down. And then this recurs off and on. Which part do you think is the problem? I just wanted to try and repair this spare TV, else it will go to trash.

Thanks, Raj

Sounds like the line oscillator is 'off speed'. Look for an adjustment called 'line hold' or 'horiz freq' and set it to the mid-way point - check that the adjustment is stable by changing channels a few times.

The heck with "adjusting the oscillator"...... it is doubtful that there is even any kind of adjustment.... More than likely there are high ESR or otherwise faulty electrolytics in the V Defl circuitry.... and/or cracked solder connections in and around the V Out chip. His description was more like a line speed problem than a field fault - although it's difficult to be certain without seeing it. It is more than likely that there is some way of adjusting line speed - but it won't be an external pot like in the distant past.
