I agree with that ( throw in driving to altitude). If the technology is improved, its usefulness will far out way lower quality workmanship. Bad medical care today is always better that great care long ago. It was about five years ago I succumbed to the fact that chips in cars are better that good old car you could work on.

Dating myself here - I recall when they came out with high temperature varnish for motor wire, I thought motors built with the new technology would last forever, but makers took another approach and started making smaller motors that run hotter, and overall reliability fell.

As long as people make buying decisions based on price rather than quality, expect the trend to continue. The sad part is that it has gotten so bad in many markets that it is no longer possible to find a quality product at any price.

People who make cheap products can get away with it legally. This is my reason why they can. They know if the price is low enough, they can offer a warranty that look great but after postage x2 and handling and taxes, it is almost better to get a new one. They also know many americans move allot and leave cheaper stuff in the dumpster that might have been used just for a short period and never had the chance to break.
