Grounded speaker

Peavey mod 054 in a Basic 122, one side of the voive coil grounded to the basket and hence the magnetised polepiece. Ok it strengthens the spade terminal strip but why risk a blown voice coil, from current surges, from wire/s touching rust or swarf flecks, when it may well survive just the abrassion? Or is there some acoustic or amp stability relevance?

An abraded VC isn't going to survive long in a guitar amp so it really makes no difference to me if the minus lug is common with the basket.
