faulty philips cd changer (uk)

Hi everyone. This is my first time on this site, and in fact in any kind of online discussion group. I've got a Philips MC90 CDR Micro hi fi (about 5 years old) which has the cd drawers jammimg all the time, whether the machine is switched off or on. Once I switch on there's a sound as if a drawer is trying to open but can't. The only way I can get this to stop is by removing the mains lead. I've connected the sound from my tv and associated devices to the unit and this is the main use I make of it. I would be happy just to disable the cd changers because I can play cd's through my dvd player, but that constant sound of a drawer trying to open is quite alarming. Any suggestions?

LOOK UNDER THE transport for a slipping rubber belt. hopefully that is all which needs changing. i have also seen some philips mini hifis with bad ribbon cable conencting the drawer to the pcb - flexing over time had cracked it.

Is this one of the Philips models fitted with the Sanyo 3-changer mech, where the discs are stacked one above the other, and disc carrier trays slide back and forth into the drawer? If it is, I have comprehensive alignment instructions for it, and a video tutorial available online as a dot zip download. You only have to look at this mech wrongly, and it will go out of alignment. Problems can be due to one or other of the two belts slipping, ( not the easisest to get to ) but most often, these are innocent of causing the trouble. If you need the instructions, mail me direct off-group, and I'll send them together with the video URL
