Drunks and set-up menus

Drunken owner of DVD player managed to go into the set-up and change language to German and NTSC for the UK (English and PAL)

Not only that but full brightness and minimum contrast With a B&W image now on a UK TV, only line-locked, and about 3 overlayed images so could not distinguish the yellow highlight on the set up screen.

Other than turning TV to full contrast and low brightness which only just showed a vague difference between yellow and white, any other tips for the next time someone turns up with such a "repair" ?

as a ps If PS means pan scan what does IS mean in the aspect ratio option select button "PS/IS" not explained in the DVD manual ? I don't personally own a DVD player so may be a dumb question but Googling for such terms is a waste of time

Probably...

PS = progressive scan IS = interlaced scan

Note the model number, then note where the PAL / NTSC and other important settings that affect the ability to see a picture on a UK TV, are. Then next time, it's just a case of going where you need to be - like right3, down 2, right 1, right 1, enter. Presto !! The job's a good 'un. Some players have a master factory reset as well, that takes them back to the 'basic' settings that they came out of the box with. Menu screwups, are usually as a result of people either trying to multi-regionalise the players, by following "Professor Screwdriver's Handy Tips" in DVD Hacker's Weekly, or imagining that if they set the thing to NTSC, it will play that disc that they bought cheap in America, when they took the kids to Disney World ...

Didn't see that. Yes, I agree with Adrian. I have seen progressive and interlaced selection on players.

Try this. Unplug from the mains. Wait 30 minutes. Hold down the power button on the machine (NOT remote). Connect to mains. On many machines, this will force a general reset to the factory defaults. If it doesn't work, Google the machine and see if there is a general reset key-press sequence on the remote.

Connect dvd player to computer with capture card, composite in. Set input signal of tv card to pal. Use virtualdub or tv card software to see picture in pal and change settings.
