APC SUA1500 UPS Part

Does anyone have a scrap circuit board from an APC SUA1500? A small transformer (T3) got broken off when the battery connector was tucked into the case the wrong way. APC does not sell replacement parts; they want you to send the unit to them so they can charge hundreds of $ to fix it. No way am I going to cater to their greed, when I'm perfectly capable of repairing the unit myself.

This should not even be legal. It absolutely infuriates me. This is how I deal with that kind of bullshit. If it's a current model go to a store and buy a replacement for cash. Remove the part you need and stuff the bad one back into the new unit. Return the defective UPS to the store for a refund and APC can then have it for breakfast. Rage against the system.

During the 1970's I worked for a manufactory of marine radios. One of my exercises in frustration was to calculate the cost of shipping an empty box. Zero product value, no contents, but all the overhead, billing, credit, and handling. In about 1978, it was about $70. We gave the dealers a choice of buying a single transistor for $70, or they could have a box of junk fished out of the engineering department for the same price.

I see lots of UPS's at the recyclers. I'm going there now. If I see an SUA1500, I'll try to grab it. Otherwise, can you post a photo or part number so I can identify it? I may have some older boards in the junk pile that have the same part.

Think again. There are few that are better than APC. Try using Belkin or TripLite for a while and then see how APC compares.

No luck. I bought a few other items, but nothing of the SUA series.

There's always used/rebuilt/referb/remanufactured UPS's:

The value is in the batteries. Ask if they will sell one without the batteries.

Do you think any other UPS manufacturer will supply schematics & repair parts?

In the old days they did.

For example, I have an Emerson Electric AP10S On Line UPS Technical Manual with full schematics. I don't like your chances today, though.

There is too much liability for the OEM to allow untrained techs to screw around with equipment that could cause a death, or property damage. By refusing field support, they can refuse to pay for any losses when someone tries, anyway.

If this is the reason for refusal to supply parts then wouldn't the same apply to the repair of almost every mains powered item of equipment? I think your supposition is incorrect. If it was that way then nothing would be repaired except by return to the manufacturers of the equipment.

How many consumer items in a home require the high currents in the battery bank, or have to be serviced live at that level of risk? I had one tell me that their lawyers told them not to provide manuals or parts to anyone who wasn't factory trained. All it takes is a couple darwin awards, and they get nervous.
