Facebook switching to ARM
-------------------------
http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2013/12/15/now-facebook-is-looking-at-dumping-intel-for-arm/
Google is scouting around to make own ARM chip
while Facebook is now thinking about using
ARM chips to build their data centers.
90% of the energy is wasted in a data center
built with Intel chips, and so everyone now
wants ARM. They can easily increase the
server count from million to tens of millions
and still clock in less power.
The only thing I would say to Facebook developers
and ARM developers who are thinking of using
their own ARM chips for servers is to make sure they have for
their ARM ONE SINGLE HEADER FILE that describes
ALL registers and ALL bit fields. When they
switch to another ARM chip or upgrade,
they then have only one single header file to
change and very few other modifications which
can be done in hours to days to get Linux
working on their new chip.
