Crowdfuning: Linux On Android

There have been quite some interesting Linux related Fundraising projects lately, today I came across Linux On Android

Its time to bring a true convergence between Desktop computers and mobile Android devices; the best of both worlds. Your hardware, your operating system!

LinuxonAndroid has been running for over 2 years. We have grown from strength to strength, with over 60,000 active installs of our Android app (Complete Linux Installer), 8 different Linux distributions supported and over 1500 tested Device + ROM combinations. The above video shows the project as it is right now, we are working on a teaser for what it will feel like once funded and completed... watch this space!

We come back to Indiegogo to help realise LinuxonAndroid's true goal; a truly convergent system, making your Android device the only computer you will need!

After the success(or not) of the Ubuntu Edge it is clear people want a device that does everything they could need from a computer, and we are here to offer that on phones/tablets of your choice with your selection of Linux distribution.

This is an amazing project. Geek gods of Linux have struck again!!!

These guys have managed to install Linux distros from a choice of 8 distros as a second OS on android phone computer with a custom built installer. Boot the second OS and log into by an android vnc app to get full second computer and OS working on the same phone. Works on around 1000 Android devices already. At least 65000 installs already. One of their funded aims is to get rid of the vnc and have the second OS directly handling the HDMI port.

Numerous other distros can benefit from this from having an ARM port of their distro that works well on numerous readily available machines. Also embedded machines requiring full ARM distros to power them instead of Android.

Still waiting for some way to erase the Android OS and replace it entirely with a native Linux install. THAT would be an amazing project.

Not necessary for a lot of gadgets. The cubieboard has android, but has preferential boot for SDCard. So if a uSD card with Linux is inserted, it boots that first. Almost anything with the Allwinner chips like A10, A20 can boot this way. Sometimes an internal button to put the device into 'FEL boot mode' needs to be pressed. More sales to the companies that put in dual boot features.

I bought cubieboards and A10 / A20 tablets and do this all the time.
