Capitalising On New Opportunities For Linux Hardware Companies

--------------------------------------------------------------

2014 must rank as one of the most seriously increased opportunity years for Linux Hardware Companies.

What was available to Samsung, TI, ST, Allwinner, Rockchip, Freescale, Marvel, Canonical, Valve, was nothing short of a chest of gold handed to each of them on a plate.

2014 was the year that a huge variety of ARM distros came of age with fully fledged Linux distros running on ARM. They were all desktop capable. They were all capable of adding a phone modem and GPS modem. They were all capable of SATA or eMMC operation, and all had LCD capability.

What you could have built with it is a huge variety Linux desktop PC tablets, with break out connectors at the back for low level hardware tasks such as IoT, lab tools, gadget making kits and so on.

These flap at the back is not for grandma for sure, they are for geeks to make new products and expand the market share at an alarming rate in all directions.

The real hacker friendly companies that expect to see growth would be shipping to this sector Linux PC tablets with software tools to directly control I/O lines, directly control cameras, GPS, motion sensors, wifi, bluetooth, USB, power management, speakers, and all the other gadgets built into the Linux PC tablet such 3G/4G modem so that what you end up with is a fully fledged Linux PC tablet that will storm the market as it gets purched and turned into a component of otherwise bigger gadgets like CNC machines, 3D printers, Laser cutting machines, IoT devices, remote controllers, IP cams, recording devices and so on.

The most reassuring feature of Linux is that it is free to use and therefore free to copy and free to scale up to many machines adding little in the way of software costs compared to any other competing vendors in the same market.

Around 2 trillion dollars of Linux based hardware got sold in 2014. It could easily add more billions. Just waiting for new users to do the honour and make Linux desktop phabets with ports at the back to allow tinkering and ship with the phabet software so that people can use the internal workings of the hardware from the back.

Wow. Cutting edge stuff. Acoustically coupled, I trust.
