Universal remote + X10

Hi,

Although I never used my X10 remote I believe that this might work: Find out what is really in these units. Yes, they may have French names but are likely Japanese design and made somewhere in Asia. You may have to open the units, or search the web. Usually the brand name companies don't want people to know. After you found out use the codes for these Asian units.

Reason I say this: We moved from Europe to the US and brought our European VCR to play old tapes. Then we bought a new Panasonic VCR for use with American TV. Oh wonder, the remote for this new Panasonic also works fine on our old Blaupunkt VCR. So we can use the same remote for both now. Because the Blaupunkt in reality contains the innards from Panasonic...

Just an additional remark: Try setting the X10 remote to the code of the Panasonics PV-7453. That's a pretty popular VCR core. Then try if it gives you the basic functions.

Well, it looked very similar when I opened it and all basic functions seem identical from the Panasonic remote. I think OEM cores are pretty standard these days. Why not, if it is a good product in the end? Same with cars. There were cars that were US made but had Japanese engines.

Yes, Jan, but he wants to have one remote that can control all the A/V gear and also the X10 modules. You can buy that with the X10 system but have to live with whatever codes it comes with for A/V gear.

The difference versus a universal remote is that this one has an additional RF transmitter that sends commands to a receiver that is plugged into a power outlet.

What I want is to modify my X10 remotes eproms or so,

on the site of X10, they just sell a new kinf of remote that does "learning" from other remotes... far expensive 50 USD !

I did a small attempt at IR transmit from the PC, it worked fine in DrDOS 6, but the timing screws up badly in MS windows and Linux (you need to generate 38kHz or so), I used it with an IR LED to start my video recorder, switch it to a channel, and used the composite for the teletext decoder chip to get the stock prices. Used this for years ... It could 'learn' commands too, a simple IR photo diode, limiter, and digitized via 1 bit on the par port as fast as you could read it. But how does this remote then work with X10? Our X10 system can only be controlled via RF transmitter or via something that directly plugs into a power outlet. I am using both but have not heard of any other scheme such as IR. Maybe I missed something?

The remote we got from X10 came with a package. It has IR for VCR, TV and so on and in the lower part are the X10 buttons which activate an RF transmitter in there. The antenna is hidden inside so it looks like an ordinary remote.

That reminds me - several years back when I was visiting my friend Willi in Frankfurt he gave a very nice "German" Telefunken Tape recorder as a present to my children!

I lost no time in opening the case after I reached the hotel - it was Sankyo and made in Japan.

To beat the cost of manufacture people once went to Japan and then to Taiwan and when these places also became expensive they looked to other places and are today with China - every stupid thing I see in the market today is made in China.
