No. My wife did her Ph.D. in Austin, Texas, and was able to spend time with people who drank wine and talked sense about subjects other than grid-iron football. It wasn't easy, and she stepped out of her Ph.D. viva into her car and drove straight to MIT, thus spending no more time in Texas than she absolutely had to.

But - despite the best efforts of the rednecks - even Texas hasn't got a monoculture.
