Looking for a "most common" PLL IC

Can anyone recommend a PLL IC (18 pin DIP) that was commonly used in communications equipment four or five years ago? Friend has a device with what appears to be a defective PLL IC that is causing a transistor to overdrive a resistor, burning the PC board on which it is all mounted. Problem is, the manufacturer planed the IC top, removing all traces of whatever identification it once had. The IC is the heart of a signal processing PC board, and is the only IC chip on the board. I don't actually



*know* that it is a PLL, but highly suspect it to be. Am tempted to replace it with an NTE7108, just on a wild-ass guess, but would rather have a better reason for my choice of replacement part. Believe me, *any* help would be greatly appreciated. The device is currently not working, and the manufacturer does not repair, only sells replacement units, so if I damage it further I doubt it would be a great loss. Would rather fix it though... Again, any help is appreciated. Is there any way I can test the defective chip to see if it is indeed a Phase-Locked Loop IC? It does not appear to be totally fried, only crippled.

Aaah. Thank you. Only thing is, this is a 16-pin DIP, and I am working with an unlabeled 18-pin DIP. This is a start, but I wonder if there is something similar in an 18-pin package?

it's the same part but in different package size so here you can get a pll circuit in 18 pdip !

Huh. Okay, different packages, same part. Only this PLL appears to be used in frequency synthesizer applications only, not signal processing like the one I am dealing with. What I am dealing with is a device that allows someone to use the telephone to talk with someone at their front door, intercom-style, rather than through a one-of-many-frequencies application like a radio. Based on that, I don't *think* this is the part I am looking for. I do appreciate the help though. What you offer does meet the parameters I specified in my original request, and I am not un-appreciative. I have just realized more about what I am looking for than I originally did...

Upon further reflection, I have decided that my previous opinion may be that of a person who is full of crap. You may have pointed me straight at the chip I need after all. I was thinking I needed a PLL chip for a signal processing circuit rather than a tuning circuit, but that may not be the case. It may be the exact opposite, in fact. Thank you very much for bringing this particular chip to my attention. It may be exactly what I need. Now I just have to figure out how to tell if it is, or if I need something else... Time to break out the freq counter and o'scope, with the whole circuit on the test bench.
